Friends of the island events

We're looking forward to participating in the DKX Spring Open House, April 15 at the airport.  Please stop by and say hello, we'd love to meet you and talk about The Friends of The Island!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Q&A with ATC Jeff Coffey on November 12. Great stories, fantastic information and plenty of A Ha moments!

Jeff is a lifelong Knoxville resident who grew up in South Knoxville and went to high school just over the hill from DKX. He has been an air traffic controller since 1991, spending his entire career at TYS with over 25 years as an ATC instructor. In addition to his work at TYS, he worked the temporary tower at DKX for UT home games in the 90’s, spent 15 years working Sun-n-Fun where he was awarded controller of the year in 2014, and worked the busiest controller tower in the world for 9 years at OSH during EAA AirVenture! Jeff in also a pilot with his commercial (single and multi), CFI and soon to be CFII ratings, and AGI/IGI certificates. He is an active member of Knox Flyers at DKX.

Needless to say, Jeff has a unique background with experience both controlling and flying airplanes in a wide variety of environments, and has a deep knowledge of the Knoxville airspace. This will be a great opportunity for pilots to learn more about who that voice is talking to you while you’re flying around and what’s the reasoning behind his requests! Jeff will talk about the Knoxville airspace, how best to work with TYS ATC, and how to “fly friendly” around DKX and TYS. He will also be available to answer questions.

This will be a great event for pilots, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone interested in learning more about air traffic control.
